Billy Ray Cyrus exploded onto the country airwaves in 1992 with his mega hit “Achy Breaky Heart,” a track from his debut album Some Gave All. The record sold over 20 million copies worldwide and is his best selling album to date. “Achy Breaky” rode atop the charts for five straight weeks, and Some Gave All debuted at #1 on both the Top Country Albums and the Billboard 200, holding the top spot for an astounding 34 and 17 weeks, respectively. The failure of the other tracks on the album to perform nearly as well on the charts or on the airwaves resulted in the inevitable ‘one hit wonder’ label that would stick with Cyrus for years to come. In a tongue in cheek response to these critics, Cyrus named his next album It Won’t Be the Last. Released in 1993, the album went platinum, and several tracks did well on the charts; but the reception still paled in comparison to “Achy Breaky.”

Storm in the Heartland followed in 1994 and was a disappointment by any standard, managing to reach only gold. Trail of Tears (1996) received critical acclaim, but barely made a blip on the charts, failing to reach any certification. Shot Full of Love (1998) suffered essentially the same fate, as did 2000′s Southern Rain, Cyrus’ last country album for the next six years. Cyrus continued his hiatus from the charts with the release of two Christian albums, Time Flies and The Other Side (both 2003). Billy Ray persevered, however, releasing Wanna Be Your Joe in August, 2006, his first country effort since 2000. Released while Cyrus was filming Hannah Montana with daughter Miley, the album debuted at #24, sold decently, but was essentially ignored by country radio.

It Won’t Be the Last turned out to be a prophetic turn of phrase. Billy Ray resurrected his career in 2007 with a star turn on the hugely popular Dancing With the Stars in 2007, finishing in 5th place with pro partner Karina Smirnoff. Taking advantage of this exposure, Disney bumped up the release of Home At Last by a month, where it debuted at #3, selling 30,000 copies in just the first week. The success was no doubt due in large part to the inclusion of a duet, “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” with Cyrus’ super mega teeny bop pop sensation daughter, Miley, with whom he was currently appearing in Hannah Montana. The duet reached #4 on the country charts, giving Cyrus his first top five single in almost a decade.

Buoyed by the wave of his current popularity, Cyrus recorded Back to Tennessee, his eleventh studio album, in 2008. The album will be released on April 7, 2009, on Lyric Street Records. It includes another duet with daughter Miley, “Butterfly Fly Away.” The album is a evocative homecoming in Billy Ray Cyrus’ remarkable journey back to the musical roots that have long sustained him. “This album is everything I am at this second,” says Cyrus. “It’s everything that I’ve been through and every step along the way to this point — Ironically, sometimes looking back, in my case Back to Tennessee, is the best way to move forward.”
