Beyonce rose to fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of the girl group Destiny’s Child. Knowles has sold more than 50 million records worldwide with the group. During the hiatus of Destiny’s Child, Knowles released her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love, in June 2003. Dangerously in Love, which spawned the number-one singles “Crazy in Love” and “Baby Boy”, became one of the most-successful albums of that year. It earned Knowles five Grammy Awards in a single night in 2004, and its reception signaled her viability as a solo artist. The disbandment of Destiny’s Child in 2005 facilitated her continued success: she released her second solo album, B’Day, in 2006, which contained the worldwide hit “Irreplaceable”.
The success of her solo albums has established Knowles as one of the most marketable artists in the music industry, and she has expanded her career to acting and product endorsement. She began her acting career in 2001, appearing in the musical film Carmen: A Hip Hopera. In 2006, she starred in the lead role in the film adaptation of the 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls, for which she earned two Golden Globe nominations. Knowles launched her family’s fashion line, House of Deréon, in 2004, and has been engaged to endorse such brands as Pepsi, Tommy Hilfiger, and L’Oréal.
Her third solo album, I Am… Sasha Fierce, was released in November 2008, and spawned the worldwide hit “If I Were a Boy”, and the US number-one single “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”. Knowles says that the name Sasha Fierce is the name of the persona she adopts when she performs onstage. “I have someone else that takes over when it’s time for me to work and when I’m on stage, this alter ego that I’ve created that kind of protects me and who I really am.” In an interview with producer Rodney Jerkins, he said that the style of the album kept switching and was inspired by the musical biopic film, Cadillac Records, in which Knowles had been cast to play famed blues singer Etta James. Knowles will also star opposite Ali Larter and Idris Elba in a thriller film called Obsessed, which has been in production since May 2008. This film is due in the United States in April 2009, with an international release slated in March 2009.
The most heavily anticipated concert event of the year, Beyonce’s “I AM…” world tour will mark the artist’s first full-length concert since 2007′s sold-out “The Beyonce Experience” and will premiere live performances of songs from I AM…SASHA FIERCE, her latest international #1 chart-topping album.
Thierry Mugler, world-renowned designer, director and photographer, will work as creative advisor and costume designer on Beyonce’s “I AM…” world tour.
The “I AM…” world tour production promises to showcase the music and film superstar like you’ve never seen her before. Beyonce’s extraordinary all-female band, The SUGAMAMAS, will join her again to perform musical hits, classics, and surprises in a newly-created high-tech state-of-the-art concert environment.
