Twenty-one year old Jesse McCartney rose to fame in the early 2000s as member of the boy band Dream Street. He subsequently branched out into a solo career, and has appeared in the television series Summerland. A native of Ardsley, New York, McCartney began performing in local community musicals at the age of seven, before joining the national tour of The King and I at age ten. The following year, McCartney moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an actor and singer. McCartney released his first solo EP in July 2004. The album featured three songs: “Beautiful Soul,” “Don’t You,” and “Why Don’t You Kiss Her.” In 2004, he performed a duet with Anne Hathaway, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” which is featured on the Ella Enchanted soundtrack. McCartney’s debut solo album, Beautiful Soul, which was two years in the making, was released on September 28, 2004 in the United States and over a year later in Europe. He categorized it as a “pop record” with twists of urban. The album featured four songs co-written by McCartney. Beautiful Soul reached number 15 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified platinum.
In the fall of 2007, McCartney co-wrote the hit song “Bleeding Love” with Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, produced by McCartney and Tedder for English singer Leona Lewis’s debut album, Spirit. The song was nominated for Record of the Year at the 2009 Grammy Awards. McCartney recorded his own version, which was released on some editions of his Departure album. The song’s worldwide success gave McCartney added credentials as a songwriter. American Idol’s Simon Cowell asked him to go back to the studio with Tedder to write songs for the Idols, including McCartney’s 2008 summer tour mate, American Idol season six winner Jordin Sparks.
McCartney’s latest album, Departure, released May 20, 2008,is his third studio album. Departure has sold nearly 260,000 copies in the U.S. It has been described by McCartney as a complete change in musical style compared to his previous releases. Describing the album, McCartney said “I’m going for Prince chord changes, Michael (Jackson) melodies, and the bigness of Madonna - fun ’80s stuff. That’s the best that I can put it.”
