Flight of the Conchords is a Grammy Award-winning New Zealand comedy duo composed of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement. Billing themselves as “Formerly New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo a capella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo,” the pair uses a combination of witty observation, characterization and acoustic folk guitars. Their comedy and music became the basis of a BBC radio series and then an American television series, also called Flight of the Conchords. They were named Best Alternative Comedy Act at the 2005 US Comedy Arts Festival and Best Newcomer at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, and they received a nomination for the Perrier Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2003. The duo’s live performances have gained them an increasingly large audience.

Flight of the Conchords’ worldwide popularity grew out of small but loyal cult following in their native New Zealand and Australia. They have found more mainstream success in recent years, following a special on HBO and an appearance on David Letterman. In 2007 the duo performed at Austin’s SXSW Music Festival and at Bonnaroo in Tennessee. On February 10, 2008 they won the Grammy for best comedy album for The Distant Future. Unchanged by the adulation, the duo celebrated by giving a freebie show at a small Wellington video store called Aro Video just three days later. They have continued to play large and small – in some cases very small – venues in the subsequent year.

The duo star in a television series for HBO titled Flight of the Conchords, which premiered in the United States in June 2007. The series simultaneously premiered in Canada and is also currently playing on The Comedy Network. The show revolves around the pair as they try to achieve success as a band in New York City trying to develop an American fan base. The regular cast includes several fellow comedians and features many other comedians in guest starring roles. Bret and Jemaine’s songs are woven into the plot of each episode.

Flight of the Conchords is the debut full-length studio recorded album by the folk parody duo; it was released in April, 2008 by Sub Pop. All songs were written and performed by Bret and Jemaine. The album debuted at number three on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling about 52,000 copies in its first week. In their home country of New Zealand, the album debuted at number two, jumping to the number one spot the following week. The album has been certified Platinum.
