The Allman Brothers Band was formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969 by brothers Duane Allman (slide guitar and lead guitar) and Gregg Allman (vocals, organ). While the band has been called the "principal architects of Southern rock", they also incorporate elements of blues-rock and hard rock, and their live shows have jam band-style improvisation and instrumental songs. Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident in 1971.
More so than most bands, the Allman Brothers have frequently released live albums that filled the role of conventional studio albums, in that they were recently recorded and often contained new material not on any studio album, or significantly lengthened or revamped versions of studio material. They frequently release "Instant Live" offered at the end of various concerts, recording the majority of the concert, and making an album from the sound board recording. They have released eighteen studio albums and eight live albums in addition to the instant live albums.
